What Spearfishing Gear Do We Stock?

We stock spearguns, wetsuits, fins, masks, floats, and pretty much everything else you need for FNQ spearfishing.

Spearguns

Our speargun range covers entry-level through to competition-grade. We carry rail guns, rollers, timber spearguns, and pneumatic options. Whether you're chasing reef fish at Fitzroy or heading to the outer reefs for bigger game, we'll help you find the right gun. Brands include Rob Allen, Ocean Hunter, Salvimar, and more. We also do speargun servicing and rubber replacements.

Wetsuits for Tropical Spearfishing

Cairns waters are warm, but you still need protection. We stock 1.5mm to 3mm wetsuits and stingersuits designed for tropical conditions. Open-cell for serious spearos who want flexibility. Closed-cell for durability and ease of use. Camo patterns that actually work on FNQ reefs. Our staff can help you find the right thickness for the season and your dive style.

Fins, Masks and Snorkels

Long-blade freediving fins for efficient diving. Low-volume masks that clear easily at depth. Snorkels that won't flood when you're tracking fish on the surface. We've tested this gear in local conditions for over two decades. We know what works and what ends up sitting in a gear bag.

Floats, Flags and Rigging

Float lines, dive floats, catch bags, and rigging gear. Everything you need to stay safe and legal on the water. We can set you up with a complete rig or help you upgrade specific bits.

Our Westcourt store is at Shop 1/310 Mulgrave Road, about 10 minutes from Cairns CBD.

We're right on Mulgrave Road with plenty of parking out front. The store is set up so you can see and handle gear before you buy. Our team is happy to chat about your diving plans and recommend gear that fits your experience and budget. We're open Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm, and Saturdays 9am to 3pm.

Our History

We started as Spearfishing Superstore in 1999 and rebranded to Ocean Universal in 2024.

The name changed, but the expertise stayed. For 25 years, we've been the go-to spearfishing shop for Cairns locals and visitors heading to the Great Barrier Reef. We've helped thousands of spearos find their first speargun, upgrade to competition-level gear, and everything in between. The rebrand reflects our expanded range into scuba and freediving, but spearfishing stays at the heart of what we do.

What Makes Us Different?

We're Cairns divers helping Cairns divers. Our staff actually use the gear we sell.

When you ask about a speargun, you're talking to someone who's used it on the reef. When you need wetsuit advice, we can tell you exactly how a 2mm open-cell performs in July versus January. We're not reading product specs. We're sharing real experience from thousands of dives on FNQ reefs.

Spearfishing on the Great Barrier Reef

The GBR offers world-class spearfishing with coral trout, spanish mackerel, and reef fish year-round.

Cairns is the gateway to some of the best spearfishing in Australia. The inner reefs are accessible for day trips. The outer reefs and Ribbon Reefs offer bigger fish and clearer water. Water temps range from 23°C in winter to 29°C in summer, so you'll want different wetsuit thicknesses depending on when you dive. Visibility varies with conditions but can exceed 30 metres on good days. We can point you to local spots and help you gear up for specific conditions.

Speargun Servicing

We service spearguns, replace rubbers, and repair gear at our Westcourt shop.

Spearguns need maintenance. Rubbers wear out, trigger mechanisms need attention, and shafts can get bent. We handle servicing in-store and can usually turn around repairs quickly. Bring in your gear and we'll give you an honest assessment of what it needs. We stock replacement parts for most major brands, so you're not waiting weeks for overseas parts.

What brands of spearguns do you stock?
We carry Rob Allen, Ocean Hunter, Salvimar, Beuchat, Cressi, and other quality brands. Our speargun range covers entry-level through to competition spearguns.

Do I need an appointment?
No. Walk in during opening hours and we'll help you. For complex gear setups or servicing, giving us a call ahead is helpful so we can set aside time.

What wetsuit thickness do I need for Cairns?
Most Cairns spearos use 2-3mm in winter and 1.5-2mm in summer. Check out our wetsuits and we can recommend the right thickness based on your cold tolerance and dive style.

Do you buy or trade second-hand spearguns?
We occasionally take trade-ins on quality gear. Bring it in and we'll have a look. Condition and brand make a big difference.

Can you help beginners get started?

Do you stock spearfishing licences?
Spearfishing licences in Queensland are handled through the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries. We can point you to the right resources, but licences aren't sold in-store.
