What Makes Ocean Universal Different?

We started as Spearfishing Superstore in 1999 and rebranded to Ocean Universal in 2024.

The name changed to reflect our expanded range, but the expertise stayed the same. For 25 years, we've been the go-to dive store for Cairns locals and visitors heading to the Great Barrier Reef. Spearfishing remains at our core, but we've grown to serve scuba divers, freedivers, and snorkellers too. Same team, same local knowledge, same commitment to helping you find the right gear.

Diving the Great Barrier Reef

The GBR offers world-class diving with coral gardens, reef fish, and marine life year-round.

Cairns is the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef. Day trips reach the inner reefs in under two hours. Liveaboards access the outer reefs and Ribbon Reefs for pristine diving. Water temps range from 23°C in winter to 29°C in summer. Visibility varies but regularly exceeds 20 metres, and on good days you'll see 30+ metres. We can recommend gear for specific conditions and point you toward local dive operators.

Seasonal Highlights

June-July: Minke whale season on the Ribbon Reefs. Snorkel encounters with dwarf minke whales.

November-December: Coral spawning. Night diving to witness the annual reef reproduction event.

November-May: Stinger season. Stinger suits recommended for all water activities.

Dive Equipment Servicing

We service regulators, BCDs, and dive gear at our Westcourt shop.

Dive gear needs regular maintenance to stay safe and reliable. We handle regulator servicing, BCD maintenance, and general repairs in-store. Tank inspections and hydro testing available. Bring in your gear and we'll give you an honest assessment. We stock parts for major brands, so most repairs don't mean waiting weeks for overseas shipments.

Do I need an appointment to visit?
No. Walk in during opening hours and our team will help you. For complex gear setups or servicing, calling ahead is helpful so we can set aside time.

What wetsuit thickness do I need for Cairns diving?
Most Cairns divers use 3mm in winter (June-August) and 1.5-2mm in summer. Freedivers and spearos often go thinner. Check out our wetsuits and we'll recommend the right thickness based on your cold tolerance and dive style.

Do you sell dive courses?
We focus on equipment rather than training. For dive courses, we can recommend local PADI and SSI operators. Once you're certified, come see us for your gear.

Can you help beginners choose their first gear?
Absolutely. We love helping new divers find the right starter kit without overspending. Mask, fins, and wetsuit first. Then build from there as you dive more.
